What is the aim?
Reduce the number of conception rate for girls under the age of 18.
Who does this impact?
Families.
What is being measured?
The number of conceptions for females aged 15-17 years.
What is the background?
Nottingham had the 3rd highest rate of teen pregnancy in the country when the LAA was first negotiated (2006 figures). Latest figures show that Nottingham is now the 9th highest (2008 data). Some Nottingham wards have under 18 conception rates 2½ times the national average, and 15 of our 20 wards have rates that are within the highest 20% of wards in England.
Teenage parents are prone to poor antenatal health and their babies often have lower than average birth weight and higher infant mortality rates. And while young people can be competent parents, longitudinal studies show that children born to teenagers are more likely to experience a range of negative outcomes in later life.
