Description

JSNA for Older People was written in 2012. Changes have been made to how we present our JSNA and have moved towards shorter, topic-based interactive documents. However as we are in a transition phase both old and new styles of presenting the JSNA are available. Overtime all chapters will be transferred to the JSNA topic-based summaries as they are refreshed.

Description

Loneliness is an individual's sense that they lack the depth and quality of relationships with others that they feel they want or need. People can be alone and not feel lonely, or they may be with others and feel very lonely, as many people do who live in care homes. Loneliness is therefore slightly different to social isolation which is an absence of social contact, although it is clear that one can lead to the other. Loneliness can affect people of all ages but older people are particularly vulnerable since they are more likely to suffer poor physical or mental health and live alone. Description

Falls and fall-related injuries are a common and serious problem for older people. People aged 65 and older have the highest risk of falling, with 30% of people older than 65 and 50% of people older than 80 falling at least once a year. The human cost of falling includes distress, pain, injury, loss of confidence, loss of independence and mortality. Falling also affects the family members and carers of people who fall. Falls are estimated to cost the NHS more than £2.3 billion per year. Therefore falling has an impact on quality of life, health and healthcare costs. Guidance on the assessment and prevention of falls in older people was updated in 2013 (NICE CG161)

Dementia is a term used to describe a range of brain disorders that have in common a loss of brain function that is usually progressive and eventually severe. The most common types of dementia are Alzheimer¿s disease, vascular dementia and dementia with Lewy bodies. Some people have both vascular dementia and Alzheimer¿s disease. Dementia is one of the main causes of disability in later life and the number of people with dementia is rising yearly as the population ages. This chapter considers the health and social care needs of people with dementia. Other relevant links within the JSNA are to sections on Adult Mental Health (particularly Depression), End of Life, Older People with Long Term Conditions and Carers.
