INSPIRE directive

The INSPIRE directive is a set of EU legislation which exists to facilitate and encourage cross-boundary sharing of environmental data and information between EU member states. The definition of environment is broad and INSPIRE includes data about: population, demographics, land use and planning, utility services, energy resources, species and habitats, metrological features and health and wellbeing.

Many different organisations have a duty to publish geographical datasets about the environment, at either a local, regional or national level under these EU INSPIRE Regulations. This includes all councils.

Even though this a legal requirement, the benefits for Nottingham City at a local level are wide reaching:

  • Easier access to good quality national data
  • Easier sharing of local data
  • Increases efficiency and helps us to make better informed decisions.

Our environmental datasets are published on our Open Data website. If you are interested in data from other organisations please visit data.gov.uk.

In addition to these datasets, we publish many other datasets which are available in the data catalogue on Open Data Nottingham.
